Sydney Tourism News: World Time Attack Returns To Sydney

The World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC) returns to the recently renamed Sydney Motorsport Park this week.

One of the more unique events on Australia’s motorsport calendar, the Friday and Saturday schedule combines daytime Time Attack competition with evening drift challenges

For the uninitiated, ‘Time Attack’ events see competitors completing one flying lap of a circuit,
aiming to achieve the fastest lap time.

Vehicles typically feature wild aerodynamic, mechanical, and weight-reduction modifications, though still using road-legal semi-slick tyres.

WTAC is hailed as the largest Time Attack event in the world, and this year brings 93 competitors from Japan, the US, UK, and New Zealand, along with a host of local entries.

wtac 02
Local entries include the return of the MCA Suspension Nissan Silvia -
fielded by former Australian Rally Champion Murray Coote and his son Joshua - with a raft of improvements aimed at improving on their
surprise 10th placing in 2011.

Queensland-based Project Nemo will debut its wild carbon fibre-bodied Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII, with an elaborate aero package to help put more than 600kW to the ground.

Tuning house V-Sport will also compete, bringing what it claims to be the world's fastest Mitsubishi Evo X to the event.

“We just tried to lightweight everything while still keeping the strength within the car. It’s a fine balance,” John Healey, V-Sport’s Sydney Manager, said.

“To further reduce weight, we’ve installed a floor mounted AP Pedal Box, lightweight Brembo competition brakes and a Racetech carbon fibre seat. The car should be 100-150 kgs lighter than it was last year. The biggest disadvantage compared to many other Time Attack EVOs is that early model EVOs are much lighter.”
The V-Sport Evo will be piloted by rally driver Nick Bates.

Sydney's Mega-Events Migrating to Sydney Olympic Park

With the upcoming closure of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre (SCEC), many of Sydney’s larger events have already announced their re-location to Sydney Olympic Park.

This week two major events, the 2014 and 2016 Sydney-based Australian International Motor Show and the 2014 Rotary International Convention have releases statements about the relocation.

Yesterday (18 June) Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris, announced that Rotary International has confirmed its 2014 Rotary International Convention event will remain in Sydney, and will re-locate to Sydney Olympic Park.

After winning the initial bid in 2006, Sydney was required to resubmit an extensive proposal showcasing Sydney Olympic Park as the host venue, due to the closure of SCEC from the end of this year for an extensive three- year expansion and redevelopment of the Sydney International Convention and Exhibition Precinct (SICEEP).

The 2014 Rotary International Convention will be held in June and is expected to attract up to 18,000 delegates who will spend 72,000 delegate days in Sydney and deliver an economic impact of $60.5 million to the state.

“This is a great example of NSW’s flexibility and agility when it comes to hosting world-class events. Government and the private sector have rallied together to make sure that the promised Rotary 2014 event will be delivered seamlessly, despite the required venue change,” said Souris.

“This is a spectacular result for our visitor economy, with the event delivering an estimated economic impact of $60.5 million. It is also a strong demonstration that Sydney is well and truly open for business – even during the SICEEP development period.”

Business Events Sydney’s (BESydney) CEO Lyn Lewis-Smith said, “We are thrilled to hear that the international Rotary delegation will still be coming to Sydney in 2014. Such a mega-event is an amazing opportunity to demonstrate the skill and adaptability of our industry.”

“BESydney worked hand in hand with the NSW Government and Sydney Olympic Park Authority on venue options. We showcased the flexibility, diversity and passion that ‘Team Sydney’ had to offer the Rotary event in 2014. This has delivered a fantastic outcome for Sydney, NSW and Australia’s global reputation,” she added.

The 2012 Australian International Motor Show in October will remain at SCEC.

“Whilst the SCEC has been our home for twenty three shows, we are very much looking forward to the opportunities presented to us and exhibitors alike at Sydney Showground,” said Australian International Motor Show, event director, Russ Tyrie.

“The Sydney Olympic Park venue will enable the Motor Show to grow and become a more diverse event, with the expansive outdoor areas giving exhibitors more room and the chance to host both on and off stand activities – the possibilities are practically endless.”

“SCEC has been a wonderful venue for Motor Shows in Sydney over the years, hosting hundreds of model reveals with almost five million visitors streaming through its doors to see the best that the Australian automotive industry has to offer,” said Tyrie.

“We’re looking forward to seeing how the plans shape up for its redevelopment; but rest assured, the 2012 Australian International Motor Show at SCEC promises to be a fantastic send-off to a great venue.”

AIMS To Relocate To Sydney Olympic Park For 2014 And 2016

Organisers for the Australian International Motor Show have confirmed that the 2014 and 2016 events will be relocated while the show's traditional home is redeveloped.

After considering several options, the showgrounds at Sydney's Olympic Park have been chosen as the caretaker venue.

The 2012 show (October 19-28) will be held at the regular Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre location, before the venue closes for an extensive expansion and redevelopment project.
AIMS’ new alternating city formula will see the 2013 and 2015 shows held as normal at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

"The Sydney Olympic Park venue will enable the Motor Show to grow and become a more diverse event, with the expansive outdoor areas giving exhibitors more room and the chance to host both on and off stand activities the possibilities are practically endless," said Event Director Russ Tyrie.

Sydney Olympic Park has proven credentials for large scale events, with the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show and Sydney 400 V8 Supercar round among its credits.
In the meantime, “the 2012 Australian International Motor Show at SCEC promises to be a fantastic send-off to a great venue," Tyrie said.

Ricky Stuart: Origin's Saviour?

I hate to admit it but the main reason State of Origin is so exciting this year is because of Blues coach Ricky Stuart. Taking nothing away from the greatness of the mighty Maroons, I believe Stuart’s unbridled passion for Origin football has put a new and exciting spin on a concept now in its fourth decade.

Make no mistake, the current Queensland State of Origin team is a juggernaut, a once-in-a-generation mix of outstanding leadership, management, coaching and talent. While I have enjoyed every victory across the Maroons stellar six-year run, the wins have always meant more when beating spirited opposition, and you don’t get much more spirited than a Ricky Stuart-coached footy team.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Ricky away from football and truth be told you can’t help but like the guy. He’s one of those rare individuals who can make you feel like you’re the only person in the room when you’re in his company. He’s smart, brutally honest, speaks his mind and always has time for people.

While Stuart’s place in rugby league is well known, it’s when he talks of his family and friends you see past the coach and get an insight into makes the man. Those in his circle of trust will tell you there’s not a more loyal or caring bloke on the planet and I’m sure his Blues players feel the same way.

Over the last couple of months, I have watched Stuart passionately promote all things New South Wales State of Origin. Many times I’ve thought that too much of his thinking has made its way into the public arena.  While Queensland were flying under the radar it seemed the Blues were having daily debates on everything from team selections to venues and referees.

But after seeing the television ratings for Origin I and noting the how many more conversations I’ve personally had about State of Origin this year, I’ve come to understand why Stuart’s public posturing has been a good thing for NSW, and almost necessary.

Up here in Queensland, we are openly passionate about Origin football. From the very rich and powerful through to the battlers and young families, we publicly celebrate our love for the mighty Maroons, often and loudly. We don’t hide; it can even be embarrassing at times, but it’s there for all to see.
I won’t say that NSW don’t have the same passion for State of Origin, but I do believe it’s often hidden away. One of the many good things Ricky Stuart has been able to achieve over the last 18 months is to help NSW fans feel proud to be openly passionate about their footy team.

Every time Stuart fronts a camera or puts pen to paper you get a sense that this bloke would give his right arm to see NSW beat Queensland. He smiles and jumps around when things are going well but looks all bitter and twisted when things go the way of the Maroons.

Origin means so much to Stuart and he will never stop wearing his blue heart on his sleeve. The whole of NSW is feeding off his emotions at the moment and it’s taken the competitive tension between the two bitter rivals to a whole new level.

Ricky’s passion is also doing weird and wonderful things to us rednecks north of the border. Never in my life have I wanted to see Queensland beat NSW so badly and I know I have Ricky Stuart to thank for that.

Next Wednesday night, like the rest of my fellow Queenslanders, I can’t wait to loathe the NSW coach and his band of merry blue men. Nothing would give me greater delight than to see Queensland beat NSW on their home turf, in front of their home crowd at a time when it has never meant more to them.

Sydney's Royal Easter Show Opens

Rodeo riders have polished their spurs, the prize pigs are clean and pink and the gates have officially opened at the Royal Easter Show.
More than 900,000 visitors are expected to pour through the exhibits in Sydney between Friday, April 5 and Sunday, April 22.

About 20,000 tourists have bought tickets reserved for the Asian market.

Kids will flock to the packed showbag pavilion, with a record 342 different bags on sale including Masterchef, Smurfs and Bertie Beetle bags.

General manager of the Royal Easter Show Michael Collins said more than 12 hours of entertainment would be packed into every day.

"The show is a great educational opportunity for kids to get their boots dirty," he said in a statement.
There will still be the traditional show competitions such as the young farmer challenge, the young auctioneer competition and the showdown to find the best wood chopper, honey, horse, dog, cat and alpaca.

Celebrity vet Dr Katrina Warren is hosting a Wonderdogs show featuring talented pups who perform on cue and can speak and spell.

There will also be two world record attempts: organisers will try to assemble the largest number of people wearing an eye patch while musicians can take part in a mass ukulele ensemble.

Ten Things You Must Do at the Royal Easter Show

WE list the top ten things to do at the show - from patting cute animals to coming face-to-face with the scariest characters from your favourite Hollywood horrors.

1. Dairy Farmers Farmyard Nursery:

There is nothing cuter than baby ducks, chicks, goats, puppies and lambs, and at the Dairy Farmers Farmyard Nursery, kids get a chance to see, touch and hold some of nature's cuddliest creatures. Especially for city kids who rarely get a chance to see farm animals, this is a safe and rewarding learning experience they won't forget in a long time.

Cuddle a rabbit, catch a chicken, bottle feed a baby goat or watch tiny pigs frolick in the mud.

Make the nursery a must on your agenda at the show, and meet the yongest members of the show family.

2. District Exhibits displays in the Woolworths Fresh Food Dome:

It's a fantasy of fruit and veg, a vast and multicoloured 3D tapestry created from the finest produce from all over NSW and SE Queensland.

Climbing up the walls of the Woolworths Fresh Food Dome, the District Exhibits are one of the Shows iconic displays, featuring creative and artistic installations assembled from outstanding quality grain, wool, fruit and vegetables.

Produce used in the displays represents the finest produce from each area represented, a true labour of love by those who participate.

It's not just about fun. Regional pride is on the line, and the five districts undergoing five days of judging compete for a prize that reflects the skills of professional designers, farmers and volunteers.

3. Woodchop:

A show favourite sees both men and women wielding an axe and making the woodchips fly in a race against the clock. The best axe wielders from around the world will vie for the title of World Champion in the Underhand, Standing Block, Single Handed Sawing and crowd favourite - the TreeFelling. Get down to the stadium to cheer on the Aussies as they take on the best from across the globe in the world's biggest woodchopping event.

Fun for all ages.

4. Super Slide in the Kids Carnival:

This brand-new attraction is promised to be the speediest, slipperiest fun you will have all year! The Super Slide allows children to "float'' to the top on a state-of-the-art moving walkway before they slide past a spectacular disco lights show.

Race your family and friends down one of the eight brightly-coloured lanes while grooving to the disco tunes.

Warning: kids may never want to leave.

5. Watch a Grand Parade:

You haven't experienced the Sydney Royal Easter Show without stopping to watch one of the renowned Grand Parades. Held in the Commonwealth Bank Arena, these parades feature the best of the best  the winners of the animal competitions and competitive events held throughout the Show. There will be prize-winning cattle, dogs, sheep, goats, horses and even woodchoppers.

Make sure you're in the audience for this spectacular event, as the ringmaster controls the finest display of Australian agriculture.

The iconic Grande Parade is a sheer spectacle of colour and entertainment, and all that the Easter Show is about.

 6. The Purina Sydney Royal Dog Show:

This hugely popular annual event aims to find the Champion of the Canine World.

It brings together thousands of dogseach vying for the prestigious title of `"Best on Show''.

During the 14 days of competition, thousands of dogs will compete in conformation, obedience, agility and sweepstake competitions.

Come and see the biggest, mallest, cutest, fluffiest and most obedient dogs there are.

As well as a showcase for excellence, the Purina Sydney Royal Dog Show promotes public understanding of the place of domestic animals in our community.

The feature breed for the 2012 Show is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and will be on display in the Howie Pavilion the whole 14 days of the show. You may also want to catch the NSW Police Dog team in action at lunchtime every day at the Howie Dog Ring lawns.

7. Hollywood Horrors:

This one will not be for the faint hearted, but if you dare, how about checking out the shadowy, dark castle of Hollywood Horrors? Come face-to-face with the scariest characters from your favourite shockbusters. This spine-tingling horror show promises terryfying encounters with scare actors and animatronic models that will leave you trembling with fear.

Beware of the gate keeper who is six metres tall and snatches at his victims as they come along.

Nighmares do come true in this heart-stopping house.

8. Say G'day to an Aussie farmer:

Head on into the animal pavilions and meet a real life Aussie farmer.

This is your chance to learn about the life of an Australian farmer. Find out what makes them tick, and what drives them to do what they do, day in and day out.

See for yourself the special bond they have with their animals, and if you're lucky, they might let you meet their furry friends too.

There will be thousands of animals on display throughout the pavilions, so stop in and say g'day to the farm folk who take such good care of them.

9. Showtime Spectacular:

Evenings in the main arena promise to be spectacular.

From the moment the first rodeo riders enter the ring to the finale of the Colours of the Outback Pyromusical, the Showtime Spectacular presents some of Australia's best and most exciting live entertainment.

Cheer on the rodeo champions as they take on the toughest rides of their lives, share the pride of our Australian bushmen and women as they present their horseback skills in the RAS Stockmen's Ride and hang on to the edge of your seat as the ShowTime Freestyle MotoX performs a jaw-dropping quad bike backflip.

Then settle in for the Colours of the Outback Pyromusical, which will take you to the outback and beyond, in an amazing show of light, colour and rhythm. It will set your heart racing and make you proud to be Australian.

James Blundell, an Australian country music icon with his own deep roots in the country, will host the Showtime Spectacular and promises to take you on a journey to a very special place in Australia.

10. Sinbad: In Search of the Golden Pineapple:

The enthralling story of the Adventures of Sinbad with displays of diving skill that will have you gasping.

Another brand-new show in 2012, Sinbad will dazzle the crowd by leaping from a jawdropping height of 25m into a pool below.

If that gets the heart pumping, then afterwards you can run over to the Ashton Circus Skills Workshops, with activities for children scheduled several times daily where they can learn to juggle and swing a hula hoop. Who wants to run away and join the circus?

A Booming Easter Show Still True to its Roots

EASTER SHOW 2012 – ALL YOU NEED TO NOW

IT began as a market store at Parramatta in 1823, when farmers from across the state gathered to sell their animals and compete for ribbons – and bragging rights.

Today, the Sydney Royal Easter Show has evolved from those humble beginnings to become the largest annual event in the southern hemisphere, attracting almost one million visitors each year. Royal Agricultural Society heritage centre manager Karen Finch said the vegetable and livestock contests were established in 1823 to improve breeding throughout the colony.

In the early years, the competitions were predominantly for horses and cattle but it has since grown into a chance to showcase 14,000 animals, including rats, rabbits, reptiles and goats.

The show’s first days were tough. Drought and a lack of organisation stopped the competition from the 1830s until 1869, when it was re-established at Prince Alfred Park with animals, fruit, vegetables and arts and crafts.

A decade later a concept for the district exhibits was mooted but it wasn’t until 1900 that the now popular agricultural display was showcased.

Rising rents forced the show to relocate to Moore Park in 1882 – and just under two decades later the fun arrived. The first ride was a two-carriage car that had a top speed of 50km/h, while showbags began as samples from exhibitors. The show went on during WWI but not surprisingly attendance numbers dropped.

It was closed during WWII. Just 20 years later sideshow alley was created, where curious visitors could leer at freak shows that included the world’s tallest man, shortest man, a hairy woman and siamese (conjoined) twins.

The voyeuristic exhibits were banned in 1954. That same year Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, attended.

A subsequent brush with royalty came in 1988 when the Queen’s daughter Princess Ann visited. In more recent years celebrities including Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman and Elle Macpherson have brought their children to experience the thrills and spills.

In 1998 it was relocated to Sydney Olympic Park, which is where the show will kick off tomorrow with more rides, showbags and animals than ever before.

This year also celebrates 50 years of showgirls, which is no ordinary beauty pageant – winners are judged on their passion for the land and knowledge of rural affairs.

“The difference these days is that women are more educated and worldly,” Ms Finch said. She added that the show concept had not changed over the years and was true to its original idea of bringing the country to the city as well as improving breeding standards through competitions.

“It promotes agriculture’s best and still serves its purpose of bringing country people together,” she said.

CELTIC THUNDER TO TOUR DOWN UNDER

The international success story continues in Australia.

Over the past twelve months, Australians have been quietly discovering what American audiences already know, that CELTIC THUNDER is a phenomenal international hit. With their DVD and CD "The Show" having just gone twice Platinum in Australia and their DVD "The Show" still in the Top 30 ARIA charts after a staggering 33 weeks, CELTIC THUNDER - Emmet Cahill, Keith Harkin, Ryan Kelly, George Donaldson and Neil Byrne - are set to tour Australia for the very first time in February 2012.

Celtic Thunder formed in 2008 and comprises of five diverse performers who are each a powerhouse in both their solo and ensemble songs. The group is backed by the dynamic Celtic Thunder Band and their shows are known for the use of dramatic effects of lighting and choreography as well as a stage set resembling an ancient stone pathway suggestive of those referenced in Celtic lore. They've now toured the US and Canada, coast to coast, four times with over 200 concert dates and 400,000 concert tickets sold, while their albums have sold well in excess of one million units. They are commencing their fifth tour of the US this September.

"We are blown away by the reaction to Celtic Thunder in Australia. We had such a great welcome when we were out there in March for promo so we can't wait to get back, and bring The Show out on the road and meet our Aussie fans" said Celtic Thunder's Keith Harkin.
