A spectacular convoy of 18 B Double transporters carrying the valuable cargo of the V8 Supercars racing teams attracted the jaw-dropping attention of bystanders and other drivers today. The awesome vehicles powered down the M4 Western Motorway en-route to their final destination, Sydney Olympic Park, for this weekend’s Sydney Telstra 500.Standing 4.3 metres in height and around 26 metres in length, with the average unit boasting 34 tires and ranging from 450 to 620 horsepower, was an impressive sight as it made its way from Huntington to Homebush.
“The B Double transporters definitely send a tingle up your spine when you see these vehicles on the road and to see 18 of them in convoy on the way to the Sydney Telstra 500 was something else,” said V8 Supercars Chairman, Tony Cochrane.
To demonstrate the sheer magnitude of the transporters, they have an average weight of 55 tonnes and a fuel tank size of 1,500-2,000 litres, compared with a standard car, which weighs just one tonne and has an average fuel tank size of 60 litres.
It is these transporters that ensure V8 Supercars can take the sport to spectators all over the country and the world, clocking up an average of 30,000kms per year to deliver the cars and equipment to each race venue. They are also a ‘home away from home’ for the drivers and their teams, and are even fitted out with beds so the drivers can sleep whilst travelling to interstate events.
This year’s Sydney Telstra 500 will take place on 2-4 December at Sydney Olympic Park and will offer spectators much more than just racing. From the 2011 Armor All Auto Show to the Disney Pixar CARS Truck Tour. Recent X Factor winner Reece Mastin has also just been announced as joining the Saturday night bill with Aussie rock legends Hunters & Collectors, John Farnham and Noiseworks.
